We started the conversation at Justice District Assembly -- let's continue at Walking the Walk!
Sixth Walking the Walk Justice Summit & Camp
August 12-16, 2017

Walking the Walk is the largest UU justice summit, bringing together justice-seeking UUs for a weekend of dynamic worship, workshops, practical skills, networking and community building! 2017 marks the sixth year for Walking the Walk and it has become a powerful weekend many look forward to each year. Now only $250 for the full four-day experience!

Walking the Walk is co-sponsored by the UU Justice Ministry of California and UUJAZ.  This year we will continue in our expanded, four-day format, allowing more time for personal reflection and recreation at Camp deBenneville in the San Bernardino mountains of Southern California. We will also continue to offer multi-generational and family activities!

Learn about key legislation at the state and federal levels critical to advancing justice in the face of the current political climate.
Gain practical skills, no matter what your experience level, to effective advocacy. Workshops include engaging legislators
effectively, case studies in congregational outreach, cross-cultural competency, communication skills and more.

Share and learn with other justice leaders on issues including immigrant justice, equity and racial justice, economic justice,
environmental justice, healthcare and equality. Refresh and revive your spirit with powerful worship and reflection in the peaceful retreat setting of Camp de Benneville Pines. Leave replenished and ready to make justice happen!

Keynote presentations:
Engaged Justice:   Covenantal Organizing for Today’s Movements
Katia Hansen, President and CEO of UU Refugee and Immigrant Services & Education (UURISE) and Emrys Staton, director of Pastoral and Justice Ministries at the UU Congregation of Phoenix, show how effective organizing is transformative for everyone involved. We’ll discuss organizing structures that use covenant to coordinate the work and provide intentional space for reflection and spiritual growth.  We’ll discuss engaging members of your community and congregation by providing multiple points of entry that welcome all into our movements for justice.

#LoveResists
Pam Sparr, Associate Director for UUSC’s Justice-Building Program, will discuss the collaborative #LoveResists campaign and where we are going from here in terms of UU justice making in these times. Joining her will be Evan Junker of UUJMCA and Lisa McDaniel-Hutchings of UUJAZ to discuss potential opportunities for state and local engagement.
Workshops:
Connecting the Dots

What lies behind Central American immigration to the US, how the Greeks are welcoming Syrian and other refugees, the harshness of the Ebola crisis in Sub-Saharan Africa, and public support for Donald Trump?  There is a powerful thread that connects these various developments and in order to address the root cause of much of the suffering in the US as well as internationally, we need to see it and address it.  We’ll discover that thread in a fun, interactive way playing a board game in teams.  Here is a chance to discover “intersectionality” among issues that help shape the political-economic context of our advocacy, activism, and ministries of compassion today. (Pam Sparr, UUSC)

Spiritually Grounded Social Justice Committee Meetings
Often we focus intensely on the social justice work that needs to be done, especially in these times when there seem to be daily attacks on human rights in every sector of our communities. We can feel overwhelmed by a perspective of scarcity; not enough funds, people, or time to do everything. We may come to our meetings with a sense of desperation, and tension which can confuse communication. What if we took some time at our meetings to connect, to remember that relationships are at the heart of the work? What if we took time to touch the spiritual aspects of justice work? (Hanne Stone, Granite Peak UUC)

Full Spectrum Justice
How can we engage our congregations in justice work more inclusively and cohesively?  Expand your thinking and planning by considering the multiple ways congregants express their passion for justice.  Help more people in your congregation put their faith into action together.
(Lisa McDaniel-Hutchings, UUJAZ)

Making Meaning from Justice Immersion Experiences
Justice immersion experiences can be powerful tools for building empathy & learning first-hand about oppressive systems. In this workshop, explore ways to “set the table” for immersion and facilitate reflections to turn emotional responses into action. (Alison Wood, UUJAZ)

Social Justice Vespers Worship Service
Replenishing the spirit is critical to ongoing social justice ministry.  Monthly evening justice worship services can be one way to serve this need, and inviting justice partners from outside your congregation can enrich and deepen your relationships.  We will participate in such a service, focused on a current relevant justice issue with readings, music, contemplation and meditation.
(Hanne Stone, GPUUC)

Public Speaking for Justice Makers
How do we bring a prophetic voice to our justice work? This "Public Speaking 101" workshop helps justice makers find their voice to inspire others. (Evan Junker, UUJMCA)

The Third Reconstruction, a Workshop for Congregations.
This workshop, built from the UUA study guide and further developed by UU Justice Ministry of California's Economic Justice Action Team, explores Rev. Barber's story in a manner that engages congregations of all sizes. Leave with a two-hour adult RE class to take home to your congregation! (Evan Junker, UUJMCA)

Immigrant Justice -- Building Community
This interactive workshop introduces the projects and working groups of UU Justice Ministry of California's Immigration Justice Action Team, and will connect people/congregations doing similar work for shared learning, shared resources, and to identify the partners each congregation is working with. Part of the goal for this workshop is to discuss how each congregation is accountable to their partners. (Katia Hansen, UURISE)

Sanctuary is More Than a Building
For congregations just entering the conversation, and for those that have discerned a call to engage in Sanctuary work. (Katia Hansen, UURISE)

Working with Community Partners (Panel Discussion)
Hear examples of congregations effectively engaging in justice with with local partners. Explore the dynamics, potential pitfalls and exciting opportunities of relationship-based organizing. Leave with ideas to take back to your congregation.
