What does it mean to practice our principles during a pandemic? What are we doing to guarantee free and fair elections in states targeted by voter suppression?

How is UU the Vote rising to the challenges of COVID-19, while creating a movement towards UU values in the 2020 elections?

Join us LIVE for a special update from UU the Vote. This event will feature musicians from across the country, a message from UUA President Rev. Susan Frederick-Gray, and opportunities for you to get involved and make meaningful impacts in 2020!

Prophetic, Not Partisan: Understanding IRS Non-Profit Regulations for your Congregation

As we dive into the work of UU the Vote in this election year, many congregations have questions about how to act boldly on behalf of our values while also remaining compliant with IRS non-profit/501(c)3 regulations.

Join us for this interactive session with Attorney Davis Senseman, Esq. (Davis Law Office) and Rev. Rob Keithan (All Souls Church - DC, author of "The Real Rules") where we will talk about some of the most commonly asked questions about congregational civic engagement and electoral work, interesting real-life case studies, and wonderings from our congregations as we head into UU the Vote 2020.

Statewide organizing in 2020

UUJAZ had the strategy, partnerships, and ability to unite our organizing efforts in Arizona, and focus us in our tasks:
  • having values-based conversations in a virtual deep-canvassing model,
  • supporting ballot initiatives aligned with our values,
  • comparing primary candidates for city, county, and state seats based on the issues,
  • and defending our voting process from suppression.

Our plan involved adding a coordinator to our team, who will lead us in monthly organizing calls, virtual workshops on the issues at play, and send lots of opportunities for anyone to get involved! In these overwhelming times, we want to make it as easy as possible for your congregation to be involved... like having your own staff coordinator to support you, complete with easy-to-follow calls for action sent to your newsletters!

UU the Vote with UUJAZ

Series ran in 2020
UUJAZ's UU the Vote Coordinator Casey Clowes hosted an hour of engagement. Each week they rotated through education on the issues, visits from guest partners, training on deep canvassing conversations, and phone/text banking "action hours."

For years, Arizona legislators have campaigned on promises to strengthen our public schools and fix our education funding crisis. But year after year, they failed to deliver.
Last legislative session, they squandered a billion-dollar surplus, putting the majority of the money into a rainy day fund while enacting even more tax cuts.
As a result, principals are scrambling to fill hundreds of empty teaching positions. Our educators, who rank 49th in pay, are working second and third jobs to make ends meet. And our classrooms are now the most overcrowded in the nation.

We cannot rely on lawmakers to fix a crisis they helped create. Education advocates must take matters into their own hands.
The InvestInEd ballot initiative:
  • Restores hundreds of millions of dollars annually in K-12 education funding to solve the teacher-shortage crisis, lower class sizes, hire aides and counselors, and expand career and technical education.
  • Ensures accountability. By law, these dollars must be spent where they’re needed most – on teachers, counselors, aides, support services and career and technical education.
  • Assesses a small income-tax surcharge on only the highest, 1 percent of earners. The remaining 99 percent of Arizona taxpayers won’t pay a cent more. (Households making above $500,000 or individuals above $250,000 will pay a 3.5% income-tax surcharge ONLY on the income above those thresholds. For example, someone with a taxable income of $251,000 will only pay an additional $35 per year).
