Racial Justice

“We, the member congregations of the Unitarian Universalist Association, covenant to affirm and promote: journeying toward spiritual wholeness by working to build a diverse multicultural Beloved Community by our actions that accountably dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions.”

What is AIW?

The Action of Immediate Witness process at General Assembly offers UUs the opportunity  to courageously affirm what is just and good through a statement that demonstrates solidarity with those who are mistreated or that imagines collective liberation. This takes place during GA.

Witness, Connect, Act!

A major focus of this 2021's Action of Immediate Witness was relational work to help transform the way we operate in order to embody our highest UU ideals for the times we live in. We engaged in relationship-building and listening to varied voices, as well as a few experiments to explore new ways of functioning.  Watch the full recording, or read about the highlights here.

The Commission on Institutional Change

At the New Orleans General Assembly in 2017, the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) Commission on Institutional Change was established and charged by the UUA Board of Trustees to conduct an audit of white privilege and the structure of power within Unitarian Universalism, and analyze structural racism and white supremacy culture within the UUA. The Commission was in place for three years through the Virtual General Assembly in June of 2020.
More details about the Commission on Institutional Change can be found here.

The report, Widening the Circle of Concern, represents the culmination of the Commission’s work analyzing structural and systemic racism and white supremacy culture within Unitarian Universalism and makes recommendations to advance long-term cultural and institutional change that redeems the essential promise and ideals of Unitarian Universalism.

Day at the Legislature: Racial Justice and Incarceration and the AZ Legislature
From Wednesday, February 10th, 2021

Racial justice means dismantling systemic racism, in not just ourselves and our communities, but defeating policies that keep structures of white supremacy in place. From the budget to criminal (in)justice, hear from our partners at Mass Liberation AZ and the ACLU of AZ about the bills in play that attempt to move us towards a more racially equitable AZ, and those that perpetuate racism.

Beloved Conversations Virtual

Beloved Conversations curriculum developers at Meadville Lombard Theological School have responded to the needs to learn how race and ethnicity shape our personal and collective lives and practices, in a virtual format. In 2020, 93 UUs from Arizona joined 1200 UUs in participating in the first half of Beloved Conversations: Within.

The first phase, Within, focuses on the internal work that each of us needs to do as we engage racial justice. This work is different for White folks and for Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color (BIPOC) and will be done entirely in race-based caucuses. You do not need to have taken the Fall session to register for Spring: the two halves of Within can be taken in any order.

Within work will include individual Lessons, using videos, music, and readings, accompanied by reflection prompts and suggested conversations with Critical Friends chosen by the participants; bi-weekly small group conversations in a Learning Pod; and larger, monthly, facilitated Meaning-Making Sessions on Zoom. You can expect to spend 3-5 hours each week.

We hope you join us to embody racial justice as a spiritual practice, to heal the impact of racism on our lives, in order to get free together.

Look for registration each fall and spring.
